Categories of Personal Data

This chart illustrates the many different categories and elements of information relating to an individual. Most, if not all, of the items that appear on the chart are considered Personal Data under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and/or other privacy and data protection laws and regulations (FERPA, GLBA, HIPAA, etc.).

Although not an “official” part of any New School policy or standard, the chart is provided as a helpful reference for assigning information Protection Levels, assessing regulatory compliance requirements, etc. Note, however, that the “official” categorization of any particular data item is the one documented in the applicable New School policy, standard, or guideline.
